Program

ADAPE Australasia's Biennial International Conference 2008 aims to provide a seamless program of special opportunities and high quality experiences for delegates, experienced practitioners and their leaders to explore the following educational advancement fields: (see more program detail under Program Snapshot - below)

A Leader's Forum will be held throughout Wednesday, 10 September 2008. This Forum is a specifically designed and intensive program for Principals, Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, Business Mangers, and experienced practitioners in advancement, Board / Foundation Chairs and Directors together with Alumni Association Presidents / Chairs.

A number of networking opportunities will be provided through social interaction between sessions and at the following events:

Programme Snapshot

Keynote presentations are plenary sessions. Concurrent sessions are planned in the 'strands' for Philanthropy, Alumni Relations, Marketing and Communications and Community Engagement and Enrolment the latter strand being split into two separate subjects. "Brainstorming" sessions are held on Wednesday afternoon on the theme of each 'strand' and are aimed at providing opportunities for peer to peer, facilitated discussions on particular subjects, in detail, as well as networking. These "Brainstorming" sessions will be repeated on Thursday afternoon. The following provides a small glimpse of a comprehensive main program.

The Leader's Forum is highly recommended for organisational leaders and senior practitioners in the advancement of education profession. The Forum is a specific one day program being held on Wednesday 10 Septemberand running concurrently with the main stream conference 'strands' This exciting Leaders Forum, a new initiative of conference organisers, encourages Vice Chancellors, Principals, Heads, Board Members and Business Managers, leaders and senior advancement practitioners to attend. Speakers will draw from their experience and provide their vision for the future of the philanthropic, alumni and community engagement sector. This forum will also deliver critical information designed to increase skills, inspire, motivate and encourage leaders to adapt and influence decisions in this profession and the education environment. The day will provide important and varied networks to share experiences

The Conference committee has sought to achieve a fresh approach to the programme with speakers who are drawn from Universities and Schools whilst including consultants and sponsors. 1. Presentation Sessions are 60 mins - based on 5mins to move to / arrive at room, up to 45 min presentation (incl speaker intro and delegate intro as required) and up to 10 mins Q&A.

2. The programme will be subject to change as speakers confirm and presentations are adjusted.

Visits
Personalised visits to Universities and Schools are in the planning stages for Friday afternoon. These are small group tours hosted by a representative from the organisation. It is envisaged that the list of organisations offering these visits will be available for booking on Registration. Numbers for each visit will be limited.

Registration
The Registration Desk will be open on Tuesday 9 September between 4.00pm - 6.00pm in the Plaza Foyer of the Convention Centre. During the conference the Registration desk will operate from 8.00am each day.

Professor Warren Bebbington

Professor Warren Bebbington

Professor Warren Bebbington is Pro Vice-Chancellor (University Relations) at the University of Melbourne, where he has oversight of alumni relations, development, community relations and public events.

Winner of the 2005 University of Melbourne Award for Excellence in Teaching (Barbara Falk Award for the Humanities), he has had a distinguished teaching career at the Universities of Melbourne and Queensland (where he was Professor and Dean of Music) and at the Australian National University School of Music.

Professor Bebbington is a graduate of the University of Melbourne and the City University of New York . He was a Fulbright Scholar and the University of Melbourne’s Head then Dean of the Faculty of Music from 1991-2005.

Professor Bebbington’s publications include the Oxford Companion to Australian Music, the Dictionary of Australian Music (Oxford Univ.Press), editions of works by Haydn (Barenreiter) and Graun (Garland, New York), and he was for some years music member of the International Board of Advisers for Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Professor Bebbington has served in leading roles on the boards of several national cultural and community organizations, including the Australia Council (chair of music committees for 7 years), Youth Music Australia (deputy chair), and the Australian Music Examinations Board (chair).

Professor Steven Schwartz

Professor Steven Schwartz

Professor Steven Schwartz is the Vice Chancellor of Macquarie University. He has also served as Vice Chancellor of Brunel University in London, England and Vice Chancellor of Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia.

In April 2003, following the publication of the UK Government's Education White Paper, he was asked to lead a national taskforce to produce a set of guidelines on university admissions. Final recommendations were accepted by the Blair Government in 2004. In 2005, Professor Schwartz led a UK national taskforce for the Council for Industry and Higher Education. The taskforce produced an ethical framework for universities.

After completing post-graduate work at Syracuse University in New York, he began an academic career which took him to the University of Illinois, the University of Texas and then, in 1978, to the University of Western Australia. From the University of Western Australia he moved to the University of Queensland where he held a number of positions including President of the Academic Board.

Steven moved from the University of Queensland back to Perth to take a position of Executive Dean of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Australia and then, several years later, Vice Chancellor of Murdoch University. He serves on the Boards of charitable, government and private organisations and is a Director of the Council for International Educational Exchange (USA).

Dorothy Illing

Dorothy Illing

Dorothy is Australia's leading education brand and reputation management consultant with expertise in strategic marketing communications advice and journalism. She moved to Three Plus in Brisbane as a Principal Consultant to lead and expand the company's education sector business, after almost 13 years as a senior higher education writer and analyst at The Australian.

Dorothy has gained extensive knowledge of the tertiary sector and has covered many of the national issues affecting higher education, including national policy, academic trends, the changes in international education, and funding. She has also reported widely on individual universities and maintains close links with their leading academics and administrators.

Dorothy is the winner of the 2007 Australian Council of Deans of Education's prestigious journalism award in Print Media: best news report category, for her article "Nelson Leans on Uni Over Left Bias".

Her work with Three Plus will include establishing and developing relationships with the nation's key tertiary institutions and helping clients with their branding and reputation management.

A former teacher, Dorothy began her career in journalism at the provincial daily newspaper, The Toowoomba Chronicle and subsequently worked as the Melbourne correspondent for Campus Review.

Professor Neil Dempster

Neil Dempster is a Professor in Education at Griffith University and former Dean of its Faculty of Education. He was also foundation Director of the University's Centre for Leadership and Management in Education. Neil's research interests are in school governance and leadership, ethics in leadership, school improvement and the role that professional development plays in policy implementation and organisational change. He is an internationally active researcher. At present he is engaged in a project on the linkage between leadership and learning, in partnership with colleagues at Cambridge University. This study has concentrated on leadership and learning for students in their early adolescent years. Another recent study in partnership with Education Queensland titled, The Ethical Decision Making of School Principals investigated the implication of ethics in the daily work of school leaders.

Vice Chancellor & President James Cook University.

Professor Sandra Harding holds a degree in Science (Hons Australian National University, a Masters degree in Public Administration University of Queensland and a PhD in Sociology North Carolina State University, USA.

Professor Harding has extensive academic and leadership experience and held a number of senior executive roles at Queensland University of Technology including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Development) and (executive) Dean of the Business Faculty. Inaugural President of the Australian Business Deans Council, Vice-President of the Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance, a member of the Queensland Education and Training Export Board and Chair of the Australian Statistics Advisory Council.

Currently a member of the HIH Assessment Review Panel, the Boards of the Australian Institute for Commercialisation, Townsville Port Authority and Townsville Enterprise Ltd, a member of the Council of the Australian Institute of Marine Science and on the judging panel of Queensland Export Awards, a non-executive Director Global Foundation for Management Education Ltd (Montreal).

Sandra belongs to a number of professional organisations including Aust Institute of Management, Australian Institute of Company Directors, both the Australian and the American Sociological Associations, and the Academy of Management (USA).

Dr Cherrell Hirst AO

Dr Cherrell Hirst AO

MBBS, BEdSt, DUniv (Hon), FAICD

After completing her studies in medicine and subsequently education, Cherrell gained a national reputation in the field of breast cancer diagnosis and screening as Director of the Wesley Breast Clinic (1984-2001).

In addition to this role in 1990 Cherrell's passion for education drew her to the Council of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), where she was Chancellor from 1994-2004.

In 2004/5 she undertook and Independent Review of Maternity Services in Queensland for the Minister for Health producing the report Re-Birthing. She now chairs a ministerial advisory Committee to begin work of implementing the recommendations in Re-Birthing.

Cherrell currently holds a number of Board positions including directorships of Suncorp Metway Limited, Australasian Medical Insurance Limited, MBF Group, Impedimed, and QBF and is Chair of Peplin Ltd.

She has served on the boards of many not-for-profit community organisations and continues to do so.

Cherrell has been awarded three honorary doctorates, a Centenary Medal in 2003 and the title of Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1998. She was named Queenslander of the Year in 1995.

Elizabeth Jameson

Elizabeth Jameson

Elizabeth is a corporate/commercial lawyer by background. For over 15 years she has provided legal and governance assistance to a large range of both for-profits and not-for-profits. Her not-for-profit clients are spread across education, health, arts, religious, aged care, disability, family and child support, and other community sectors.

In February 2002, she resigned her position as a partner of a national law firm, to found Board Matters, a specialist governance consultancy, with associated legal practice, Board Matters Legal.

Elizabeth has held many board positions over the past 15 years, including a University Council and the Board of Independent Schools Qld (then AISQ). She is currently a director of MAP Funds Management Ltd (Fund Manager), Queensland Music Festival Pty Ltd (as Chair), Brisbane Girls' Grammar School (as Chair), and Tarong Energy.

Mr Jeremy Madin

Mr Jeremy Madin

Before his appointment in 2001 to the headship of Cranbrook School, Mr Jeremy Madin was Headmaster of Christ Church Grammar School, an Anglican boys' school in Perth. He led the school for 13 years, was elected President of the AIS of Western Australia and served on the WA Curriculum Council for some years as Ministerial Representative.

From 1983 to 1987 he was Master of Geelong Grammar School's Timbertop campus, before which he was Boarding Housemaster and Head of the History Department at Canberra Grammar School. Mr Madin edited 'Independence', the journal of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia, and is the author of a number of educational resource kits in history and social science and several articles on aspects of school management.

Colin N. Power A.M

Colin was Deputy Director-General of UNESCO 1999 to 2000 Assistant Director-General for Education 1989 to 1998 responsible for the overall policy and management of UNESCO education programs playing a central role major initiatives, such as International Literacy Year, Education for All, International Commission on Education for 21st Century, World Teachers' Day, major World Conferences on education and development, and UN's struggle to alleviate poverty, defend human rights, and protect world cultural and natural heritage sites.

Dr Power began his career teaching science and mathematics before taking up an academic post at the University of Queensland where he is an Adjunct Professor and Alumnus of the Year 2002. 1978 to 1988 he was Professor of Education at Flinders University of South Australia. Author or co-author of 13 books and over 250 published works on education.

He has played an active role in many professional associations and is currently Chair of the Commonwealth Consortium for Education, President of World Education Fellowship (Australia), Director, Eidos Institute (an institute for educational, social research and policy) and editor-in-chief of Educational Research for Policy and Practice.

John Reid AO

John is Chairman Emeritus of the former Australian Graduate School of Management Board UNSW and Advisory Council Member of the Australian School of Business at UNSW. As President, John leads a $20 million Capital Campaign for the School of Veterinary Science at UQ.

John played a key role as a member and Trustee of the John T Reid Charitable Trusts from 1956 and Chair of Thyne Reid Foundation (now retired from both).

John's NGO and philanthropic activities have included the Chair of Museum of Contemporary Art; Institute of Respiratory Medicine; Sydney Advisory Board, Salvation Army; Council, Pymble Ladies College; Advisory Board, Centre of Philanthropy and Non-Profit Studies, QUT; and Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation.

John has an extensive history as a Company Chairman and Director. These have included Business Management Ltd; TechStar Limited; James Hardie Industries; UAC Berhad Malaysia; PT James Hardie Indonesia; Comsteel Vickers Ltd; Australian Bicentennial Authority; BHP Ltd; Barclays Australia Ltd; Bell Resources Ltd; Coles Myer Limited; and Qantas Airways.

John is the author of "Commonsense Corporate Governance". In 2006 he was awarded the honour of Life Governor of the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and the prestigious Goldman Sachs JBWere Philanthropy Leadership Award.

Dr Deborah Seifert

Dr Deborah Seifert

Dr Deborah Seifert has experience in leadership in both the school and tertiary sectors. Deborah is currently Head of University College affiliated with The University of Melbourne, and was Head of Fintona Girls' School, Melbourne from 1992-2000.

She is currently a member of the Presbyterian Ladies College (Melbourne) School Council, Director of The Invergowrie Foundation, a charitable trust which supports the education of disadvantaged girls and women in Victoria, and a Scholarship Trustee for the Mary Jane Lewis Scholarships in association with the Dafydd Lewis Scholarships.

Deborah has a wide experience in education, including verifier for the Victorian Department of Education Triennial Reviews and Performance and Development Culture, review of management and curriculum in independent schools and accreditation adviser and team member with the Council of International Schools to international schools in Cambodia, Italy, Japan, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia.

Deborah's area of academic expertise is Educational Leadership.

Christopher Thorn

Christopher Thorn

Christopher is the Executive Director of the firm's Philanthropic Services team, where his primary responsibilities include raising awareness of philanthropic issues; providing advice on investment and capital management to individuals and organisations wishing to implement a philanthropic strategy; and fostering relationships between interested parties in order to facilitate the giving process.

Christopher is a partner of Goldman Sachs JBWere. He joined the firm in 1984 and worked in Melbourne as a Retail and Institutional Adviser. In 1993 Christopher moved to New York as Vice President Institutional Sales. Upon returning to Australia in 1996 he was appointed Manager of
JBWere's Queensland business, until returning to Melbourne in 2001.

Christopher has held a variety of senior management roles within Goldman Sachs JBWere's Private Wealth Management business, including business integration and strategy. In 2002, Christopher established the firms Philanthropic Services division.

Christopher is a member of the Philanthropy Australia Council; Chairman of StreetSmart Australia, a campaign established to provide financial support to the homeless in Victoria; and Chairman of ShareGift Australia.

Janine Walker

Janine Walker

Janine Walker is Director of Office of Human Resource Management Griffith University and Adjunct Professor in the University's Business School. Janine has held significant senior positions in the field of people management and industrial relations including HR Director of Princess Alexandra Hospital, Director of Industrial Relations for Queensland Health and Industrial Director and General Secretary of the Queensland Public Sector Union.

Janine has worked as a broadcaster and newspaper columnist, served six years on the ABC Board and Chair of the Corporation's Audit Committee for four years. Government appointments have included membership of the Vocational Education Training and Employment Commission, Chair of the Australia New Zealand Foundation, Chair and member of a number of Commonwealth and State Ministerial Working Parties in the status of vocational education and training, and employment issues affecting people living with HIV-AIDS.

Janine is Chair of the Council of All Hallows' School, Board Member of The Queensland Orchestra and member of the management committee of Sisters' Inside, a community organisation providing advocacy and services for women in the criminal justice system.

Keith Brant

Keith Brant

Keith Brant is the former Vice Chancellor for External Relations at the University of California, San Diego. His responsibilities encompassed attracting private financial support to the university, strengthening UC San Diego's relationships with alumni and other supporters, and building its reputation worldwide. Keith led the final phase of the $1 billion comprehensive campaign to its successful completion, raising over $100 million in eight months. The External Relations unit encompassed almost 200 employees with oversight for philanthropic development, university communications (including special events and publications), alumni relations, state and local government relations, and advancement services. In his role, he served as president of the UCSD Foundation with approximately $420 million of assets.

Keith serves as a trustee for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the international organization serving professionals in educational advancement. For CASE, he also chairs the Commission on Alumni Relations, the professional assembly that supports the creation and dissemination of knowledge in the advancement discipline. Keith also serves as a consultant/advisor on advancement issues and provided services to the Stony Brook University (SUNY), University of Pittsburgh, University of Georgia, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Auckland (NZ) and Queensland University of Technology (Australia).

Kathy Hanson

Kathy Hanson

Kathleen Hanson is Vice President for Advancement and Planning at the Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she oversees the functions of development, admissions, communications and summer programs. Baylor is a day and boarding school, grades six through twelve, with 1076 students. Kathy has been a frequent speaker and workshop trainer on advancement issues and spoke at ADAPE's 1998 Conference in Adelaide. In addition, she serves as a consultant for many NAIS schools. Kathy is a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of Boarding Schools, where she chairs the Marketing Committee, and is also a member of the CASE Board of Trustees.

Karen Spiller

Karen Spiller

Karen has been Principal of St Aidan's Anglican Girls' School for eight years. Prior to that she was Deputy Principal (curriculum) and held leadership and teaching roles at other Anglican Schools in Brisbane. Karen has also taught at TAFE and has been involved in many different levels with the Queensland Studies Authority.

Karen currently holds positions on the National Executives for the Alliance of Girls' Schools, Australasia and the Association of Heads in Independent Schools. She has previously been a member of the Anglican Schools Commission in the Brisbane Diocese, is currently a Board Member for another school and is a Director of the St Aidan's Foundation.

As well as being keenly interested in leadership development and leadership for change, Karen is especially interested in workplace culture, industrial and human relations.
